The Top 10 Game Boy Games but why I hear you say? In last week’s episode of The Retro Hour podcast the picture above was highlighted as a triumph for the retrogaming community! Quite rightly so, it’s great to see two stars (Scarlett Johansson & Chris Evans) behind scenes on the set of the biggest movie of 2019 (Avengers: Endgame) playing on the Game Boy – first released in 1989. It wasn’t even ironic, these guys weren’t set in the 90’s with their respective stories, they left that to Captain Marvel. No, this was proof that there’s still legs in the original Nintendo handheld console. The classic.

So with the following weekend committed to indulging excessively in retrogames galore at Play Expo Manchester, Alix took the time to compile his Top 10 Game Boy Games

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (1993)

Every chapter of Link’s story is a classic and this is no different. Highly addictive for such a small format, but we feel it’s an upgrade on the NES outing…

Super Mario Land (1989)

As above, a solid affair. Addictive. Gaming at it’s very best.

The Final Fantasy Legend (1989)

The first role-playing video game for the hand-held console. An instant classic.

Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition (1998)

Just look at the little guy!?

Kirby’s Dream Land (1992)

Developed by HAL Laboratory.

Game Boy Camera (1998)

Technically for the Game Boy Colour but this was revolutionary at the time and offered endless hours of fun. Now all available via your smartphone but Nintendo did it first. I guarentee it.

Tetris (1989)

The four-celled blocks in Tetris are called “tetrominoes”. Did you know?

Donkey Kong (1994)

Essentially a remake of the classic 1984 Nintendo arcade game.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (1994)

Wario’s first appearance was on the Game Boy, this was a particularly great game for a great baddie.

Top Rank Tennis (1993)
