Pixar’s iconic franchise returns with Toy Story 5, a heartwarming and remarkably balanced installment that proves there is still plenty of life left in the toy box. While some feared the franchise might venture into overly bleak territory, director and crew deliver a film that deftly avoids being too dark or scary. Instead, it hits the sweet spot—providing just enough emotional depth and stakes for audiences of all ages to fully engage.
JESSIE STEPS UP
At its core, the film ticks all the traditional Pixar boxes. It is packed with genuinely funny moments and visual gags that will have both kids and adults laughing out loud.

However, the true heart of this narrative belongs to Jessie. Taking center stage as our main protagonist, Jessie anchors a powerful, empowering story. While it is worth noting that her voice sounds distinctly older and more weathered than in previous films – a natural consequence of time that might briefly catch long-time fans off guard – the performance remains deeply moving. Through her, the film tackles heavy, mature themes like a profound loss of identity with a gentle, accessible touch.

A MODERN TAKE ON THE DIGITAL AGE
Where Toy Story 5 truly shines is in its commentary on modern childhood. The script serves up a poignant, timely warning about the over-influence of tablets and smart devices on young, developing minds. Yet, in true Toy Story fashion, it avoids being a one-sided lecture. The narrative balances this cautionary tale, which results in Bonnie experiencing anxiety amd can make for uncomfortable viewing at times, by also showcasing the ways technology can positively affect our lives and connectivity when used with intention.

CLASSIC CHEMISTRY
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Toy Story film without our favorite duo. Woody and Buzz Lightyear are in absolute top form here. Their classic dynamic provides a comforting, nostalgic anchor to the film, supporting Jessie’s journey without overshadowing it.

THE VERDICT
Toy Story 5 is a triumphant continuation. It manages to introduce relevant modern-day themes without losing the timeless magic that made us fall in love with these characters thirty years ago. It’s funny, poignant, and a beautiful exploration of growing up in the digital era.
