Red One (2024) offers a refreshing twist on holiday movie magic, blending humour, action, and festive charm.
THE RED ONE
Starring Chris Evans, Dwayne Johnson, and a memorable performance by JK Simmons as Santa Claus, the film brings a unique approach to the genre. It’s not a classic family film – maybe Die Hard for a younger age group/generation…
THE PERFECT BALANCE
Evans, playing a lead character with a tough exterior but a heart of gold, is in his element here. His chemistry with Johnson, who delivers a charismatic yet surprisingly nuanced performance, is one of the film’s highlights.
Their dynamic provides the perfect balance between action-packed moments and light-hearted humor.
IMPERFECTIONS
The film struggles in the middle section and even with identity at times. There are subtle suggested jokes, of an adult nature, but with its rating it may as well go the full distance. Or alternatively, tone it down and fill it with more emotion – it’s always welcome at Christmas. Just don’t sit on the fence.
SANTA
JK Simmons, known for his versatile roles, is an unexpected yet delightful choice as Santa Claus.
He redefines the classic character with a sharp edge, imbuing Santa with a level of complexity that adds depth to the story.
HOLIDAY-CENTRIC
The film’s pacing is engaging, keeping the audience entertained with both action sequences and touching moments. While the storyline is a bit predictable at times, the strong performances from the cast elevate it, making The Red One a fun, holiday-centric spectacle that offers something for everyone.
