Jesus Christ the Lord, Mary & Joseph. That is blasphemy ladies and gentlemen and I apologise if I offended you, but fuck me this is difficult to write about never mind to watch it.
It’s beautiful first and foremost. 10 minutes of animation tells the story of two unlikely childhood friends, Carl & Ellie, who go on to fall in love, marry and spend their remaining years happy together. And that much is true, however not without it’s heartache, as Disney Pixar choose to tackle some adult topics, teaching kids that life isn’t always quite as you planned it to be.
The score from Michael Giacchino accompanies the pictures perfectly and you’ll have to watch it several times before you realise that not a word is spoken until Ellie’s life in pictures has passed. See for yourself, but please get the tissues ready:

They hit you right when you don’t expect it – “the trailer told me this was about a floating house on balloons and talking dogs?!” – but it is a hugely rewarding experience. It’s the greatest love story of all time told in less than 5 minutes – and that’s my kind of love story! It’s the subtle touches that are most powerful, the holding of hands, Ellie’s enthusiasm set against Carl’s clumsy infatuation with her. The commitment to building their own home together. The quiet sadness of Ellie sat in sun, the slow moving balloon Carl sends her in hospital to brighten her day. And it all sets you up for a rollercoaster ride with Carl as he sets out to fulfil Ellie’s lifelong dream.
