DIRTY BLONDE – THE INTERVIEW

THE JOURNALIX: Who are you and how did you end up here?

DIRTY BLONDE: We’re Hayley and Ailis, also known as Dirty Blonde. We found each other on Instagram through a shared love of indie and pop music and we started writing because we wanted to do things our way. We liked the tunes so we started gigging them as Dirty Blonde and when we released our first song it got played on Radio 1. Everything else kind of went from there.

THE J: Can you explain the meaning behind your band name?

DB: For us, Dirty Blonde means throwing away the unrealistic standards that are put on us and embracing the chaos. It’s about having fun, being a bit rough around the edges, and knowing that perfection is overrated. Why go through the effort of being platinum when you can be dirty?

THE J: What’s your elevator pitch for someone who asks about your music?

DB: Our music is like if Taylor Swift had an attitude problem and had a baby with Royal Blood. We sing about our problems and make a lot of noise when we’re doing it.

NBHD 2024

THE J: Have you played NBHD festival before? Do you know what to expect?

DB: We’ve never played it as a band but we’ve always enjoyed going to watch. There’s always a lot going on and you always find a new band to listen to by the time you’ve had your first pint. We’ll definitely be sticking around.

THE J: Do you have a favourite Manchester gig experience, either as a punter or performer?

DB: Probably selling out our first ever headline at the Deaf Institute. Other than that, probably the time Hayley managed to sneak in to see The 1975 at Gorilla. She convinced them that she was on the guestlist.

THE J: Who else are you looking forward to watching at NBHD 2024?

DB: Villanelle, Nxdia, Soft Launch, The Royston Club and FEET.

THE J: What does the future hold for you?

DB: We’re going to be sharing some new music in a couple of months and we’ll be launching a YouTube series.
