It’s that time of year when Halloween is in the air and Christmas is on the horizon and you seriously need to start thinking about what you want for Christmas. If like most households you’ve got a Nintendo Switch (it was the must-have of lockdown 2020 don’t you know?) then look no further than Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders…
CLASSIC POINT AND CLICK
This is a classic murder mystery story in the format of your classic point and click video game. Think Broken Sword or Discworld. The latter is a good example because where Discworld was good at bringing Terry Pratchett’s humour to an interactive world, Microids has done a brilliant job at bringing Agatha Christie’s famous private detective Hercule Poirot to life.
INVENTIVE MINI GAMES
The ABC Murders is probably one of Christie’s best stories. Timeless as proven by the 2018 BBC special starring John Malkovich. If you haven’t seen it yet, I can certainly recommend to lose yourself a few hours…
But returning to this game, there are obviously similar themes but very much a similar pace and dark tone in the style of each 1930 setting, or in this case each playable level. Some of the puzzles can be tricky but there are some very inventive mini games to overcome to help uncover a new piece of evidence.
EDGE OF YOUR SEAT
And like all good murder mysteries you’ll be on the edge of your seat when it comes to guessing whodunnit! The game has previously been available on other formats but it works nicely here with the controls and obvious convenience of a handheld device.
BONUS
A number of enhancements have been added to this edition of the game:
- A brand new interface reinforcing player’s immersion
- A smoother gameplay to provide a better experience
- Addition of multiple tutorials to guide players
- New lighting effects
- Reworked sound design
- New anti-aliasing more on par with the artistic direction of the game
VERDICT
This is a solid effort, don’t expect a revolutionary new way of playing video games but it definitely gives you value for money. If you’re an Agatha Christie fan (and quite frankly who isn’t?) This is a must-have!
