On the night Brexit finally came to pass The Journalix danced the night away with French electronic group Caravan Palace at a glorious venue named after a German prince who had a huge influence on British culture.

It was a bit of an unusual start to the night with no support until the main act came onto stage at 9pm, but “DJ Wayne” did his best to keep a crowd of all ages bubbling to a beat.

WHO ARE CARAVAN PALACE?

If you haven’t heard Caravan Palace before, they’re a fusion of jazz and dance music, formed in Paris in 2005. They’ve grown in stature and success over the years, with playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2016 and being picked for Jools Holland’s Hootenanny.

And the instrumentalists and studio wizards have pushed their idiosyncratic soundscapes to new heights, continuing to blur the lines between vintage and modern. Broadening the sonic palette, the early swing, jazz and big band of previous records now share the stage with new influences including rhythm blues, bossa and soul, amongst others. While the production and performance are firmly rooted in the present.

Not only are Caravan Palace stunning the live scene, they are one of the most viral acts in the digital world with statistics rising at an extraordinary rate; 2.1 million video uploads on TIKTOK (world’s most downloaded app), 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, +¼ billion Spotify streams, 1.1 million YouTube subscribers and 479 million total YouTube official channel streams.

BIG TUNES

And tonight’s performance more than lived up to that billing. The gothic style restored methodist church in the heart of the city was the perfect venue for a night of big tunes, dance routines and sax solos.

The majority of the set came from new album Chronologic released last year, but it was very well received with a huge reaction in particular to singles Miracle and Plume.

AN ECLECTIC MIX OF SOUND

Zoé Colotis delivered fine vocals to lead proceedings throughout but there’s no doubt the big draw here was the duo of Victor Raimondeau on saxophone and Antoine Toustou on trombone. It makes for a refreshing live music show, you can’t help but be in awe of their talents and the fusion of such an eclectic mix of sound.

The highlight of the gig came in the form of Lone Digger (from the album <|°_°|>) which brought the house down! This infectious tune has now gone straight to the top of our Friday Feeling Spotify playlist:
