You might think that retrogaming is all about getting your dusty old consoles out of storage and untangling wires that no longer fit modern TVs – but our Joni has discovered the ways of enjoying retrogaming on PS5! No doubt Xbox Series X has many of these too, so escape the dust and play them on your brand-spanking new consoles!

RETROGAMING ON PS5

Firstly, we are not saying backwards compatibility where you can play your PlayStation 4 games on your PlayStation 5 is retrogaming. Although it is a very lovely feature, PS4 is not old enough to be considered retro, just yet… But the feature does open a whole heap of possibilities!

And so that leads us onto our 2 main focal points here. The first we can assure is retrogaming. The second is more of a celebration of times gone by….

OLD VIDEO GAMES

This is the most recognisable way playing retro games, with converts from old consoles to the PS4/PS5. Often these are tarted up as a collection from a series or rebadged with extra new features but I’d advise you bide your time buying these because you’ll quickly find they become discounted – unless it is a limited release in which grab it whilst you can! (or at least before it becomes very expensive via eBay)

Flashback

Flashback is a classic that was available on the SNES and SEGA Mega Drive, Microids have really delivered with this port to next-gen consoles!

DISNEY

Disney Classic Games Collection

A golden period of Disney gaming with licensed games for Aladdin, The Lion King and The Jungle Book. 16-bit platforming at it’s finest! The games are neatly converted and offer a brilliant option of rewinding the game at any point so you can replay any part of the game when you mess up!

It is worth noting this is both the SNES version (known as ‘N’ for ‘Nintendo’ and Mega Drive versions (known as ‘S’ for ‘SEGA’) and so continues the endless debate of which is best – and version differ significantly with different developers for each console port.

Also available: The Disney Afternoon Collection

Sega Mega Drive Collection

This has been ported to many consoles over the years incuding PSP, PS2, Xbox 360 and many more and with each iteration it gets bigger and better! Play the likes of classic Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage!

Atari

The ultimate retrogaming collection? Can’t complain here with the inclusion of some all-time classics!

The Cowabunga Collection

TMNT’s finest games all available in one excellent ported collection.

RETRO VIBE GAMES

Now see here – just because it’s a new game doesn’t mean it has to compete with the greatest, most realistic graphics released. Yes these next-gen consoles are capable of great things, but there is a popular market that takes advantage of those of us looking for the nostalgia factor. Here we are sharing the latest and greatest releases that look to celebrate the 8-bit and 16-bit era of gaming, but all on modern day console…

Shredder’s Revenge

This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for all our lives. A TMNT game for the ages! It goes back to the classic 90’s cartoon and looks to follow on the style of games that proved so successful back then…

Axiom Verge

This game is all built by one man Thomas Happ, which uses the retro feel to create an old school game now known as Metroidvania (a hybrid of Castlevania and Metroid series).

The second in the series was recently released as a limited physical version from LImited Run Games:

Andro Dunos II
